Jetsunma is a modern, street-wise Brooklyn-born woman whose personal mission is all about universal compassion.
Recognized by eminent Nyingma masters HH Dilgo Khyenste Rinpoche, HH Penor Rinpoche and Dzongang Rinpoche as an incarnate Bodhisattva, Jetsunma was the first western woman so recognized in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. According to tradition, Dakinis, or female wisdom beings, bring the wisdom of the Buddha to new lands through spontaneous teaching and song.
Jetsunma has taught just such a treasury for over two decades. Her engaging style skillfully distills the vast wisdom of the Buddha, helping people to bring real compassion into their everyday lives.
Her songs spark with the spontaneity and power of traditional Bodhisattva song: bridging the urban underground and deep spiritual truth.
A Buddhist teacher for more than 20 years, Jetsunma has always searched for innovative ways to connect people to the Buddha’s teachings. Her musical ideas intensified over the past year and just needed the right person to bring them to life. Enter John Ward, the production wizard behind NYC’s Sub–Dub and Totally Killing It Productions, who just happens to be a long-time student of HH Penor Rinpoche, the very lama who recognized Jetsunma as an incarnation and serves as her principal teacher. Jetsunma liked Ward’s remix of one of her songs, so much that she ventured to his studio back in her hometown of Brooklyn for 2 days of intensive recording. Revolution of Compassion is the result.
In addition to John Ward’s electronic tracks, Revolution of Compassion features the live backing of Blinded By View, a band composed of several of Jetsunma’s students. Some of them have been with her their whole lives; they’re part of the new generation of young Americans who have grown up with Buddhism. One of them is 19-year old Tara Middleton, Jetsunma’s powerful vocal counterpart throughout the album.
